Daylight and Color in Architecture

Daylight is constantly changing and it cannot be  controlled by the architect. However it can be used to create different spatial effects by changing the size and location of its openings.
There are three main openings from which light can enter a room:

  • The bright open hall. Consists of just a roof supported by columns. offers a variety of lighting effects in different parts of the room.
To most people good light means much light. But the quantity of the light is not as important as the quality of the light.A front light is considered poor light because it gives minimum shadow,  no plastic effect and poor textural effect.

  • The room with the skylight. It is closed in all the sides and opened at the top. It can be planned so the light is equally good in all parts of the room. One of the most important examples is the Pantheon.
  • The room with the light entering from the side. This is the most common type of room. A typical example are Dutch houses. Light comes from different angles falling in the same place is a good way lo light objects and give good plastic and textural effects.

Color in Architecture

Color influences our mood. Today it influences the market and marketing items and how we view certain web sites. When a painting looses its colors it has no more meaning and no longer exists as a work of art but this is not true for architecture.
Color in architecture emphasizes the character of the building to accentuate its form and material, and to elucidate its divisions.
Color is regarded as a symbol. By the use of a single color. or definite color scheme, it is possible to suggest the chief function of a building but within it a variety of colors may be used to accentuate form, division or other architectonic elements. There are innumerable rules and directives for the employment of color to hide blemishes and defects.
Small room-pale colors
cold room- warm tones
Color cannot be strictly defined. It can be a powerful means of expression for the architect who has something to say.
Some colors loose their attraction in new surroundings, meaning they look different when seen together with different colors.
